Transforming Public Event Data into Actionable Insights

1. The Requirement

Events DC, the official convention, sports, and entertainment authority for Washington, DC, faced a challenge in measuring the economic impact of its events. They needed a data-driven approach to analyze visitor spending, mobility, and event-related economic activity.

2. The Solution

CODICE designed and implemented a “data lake” solution that consolidates transactional and location-based data to enable real-time economic impact analysis and predictive modeling based on two data categories:

  • Transactional data: Individual spending patterns at events, tracked by user, location, and merchant.
  • Mobile location data: Physical movement of attendees within and around event locations.
Key challenges included:
  • Inefficient economic impact measurement: Event data processing delays hindered timely analysis.
  • Data fragmentation and resource constraints: Human resources were being diverted to data preparation rather than analysis.
  • Limited predictive modeling capabilities: A focus on descriptive analysis left little capacity for forecasting trends.
CODICE services were called on based on these qualifications:
  • Proven track record in building scalable data solutions for complex environments.
  • Technical excellence in cloud-based analytics (e.g., AWS, Azure, machine learning, ETL workflows).
  • Expertise in data-driven decision-making and large-scale analytics.
  • Innovative data modeling and visualization.
CODICE implemented a scalable data lake architecture to transform raw data into actionable insights through:
  • Data Cleaning & Structuring: Standardized transactional and location-based data for improved quality and reliability.
  • Data Modeling & Analysis: Tracking attendee participation via ticket sales and spending analysis and economic impact modeling based on localized transaction data.
  • ETL Pipelines & Automation: Built using AWS Glue and AWS Lambda to process vast data volumes efficiently.
  • Data Storage & Processing: Amazon S3, Amazon Redshift, and Amazon SageMaker enabled secure, high-performance data storage and machine learning-powered analytics.
  • Data Visualization & Insights: Tableau, MS Power BI, and Amazon QuickSight provided intuitive dashboards for event impact assessment.
  • Spatial Data Correlation was integrated to connect event locations with surrounding economic activity, supporting trend forecasting and rapid response capabilities.
CODICE’s data lake solution provided Events DC with enhanced analytical capabilities, leading to:
  • Improved economic impact measurement across events, conventions, and tourism.
  • Enhanced forecasting for local and regional economic trends.
  • Optimized event planning and decision-making through predictive insights.
  • Strengthened collaboration with city planners and local businesses.
  • Robust data processing, with billions of data points analyzed without performance degradation.

Events DC can now use ticketing and transaction data to quantify the economic impact of individual events on Washington, DC’s economy.
